In Chapter V, Don Jaime's action of closing the shutters and ordering his students to focus on fencing is symbolic of the way that he tries to lead his life. He tries to shut out external events, but whether he realizes it or not, external events may not allow him to continue living a quiet life devoted to his chosen art.
