Education is a recurring idea in this book. Friedan discusses education in many ways in The Feminine Mystique. As she notes at the beginning, the first wave of feminism had won women many rights, including the right to earn a higher education, just like men. However, as the feminine mystique was slowly formed, various academic and media sources seized on education as the culprit for women's widespread unhappiness, which they equated with lack of sexual fulfillment.
