Why is Marcel expelled from his school in the opening pages of the novel, The Feast of All Saints?

Marcel is expelled from his school at the beginning of the book because he goes to Juliet Mercier, the mother of a famous writer named Christophe Mercier, to see if it was true that he was coming to New Orleans to open a school for young, black men.
