Morgoth (referred to as Melko in largest text in the novel) is the epitome of darkness who is the Valar’s greatest enemy. He is jealous of the Eldar and their connection to Valinor and uses tricks and deception to break the connection between the Noldari and the Valar. Morgoth is responsible for the death of the Trees of Light and the creation of the monster, Ungoliant. After placing a cursed jewel known as the Silimaris into his crown, Morgoth suffers from an eternal burn and is bound to remain in his fortress in the Hall of Iron. However, Morgoth builds an army of Orcs and Balrogs with the intention to eradicate the Eldar - particularly the Noldoli that escaped the Battle of Unnumbered Tears - and cover Middle-earth in darkness. Morgoth is a master manipulator who controls people by fear. Very few things in Middle-earth exist without his knowledge except for those protected by Ulmo and the city of Gondolin itself. Morgoth has the power to create powerful creatures made of fire, but the narrator says that these fearsome creatures will not be seen again until the end of the world.
