What does Arthur make Turpine promise to do in order to keep his life? Why do you think he does this?

Turpine promises to never refer to himself as a knight again. Arthur is disgusted by his deeds because he is a knight. He does not want to kill and hopes that stripping him of his knighthood will be punishment enough.
