Chesterton makes specific note to the significance of the symbols used in the East and West. In the East, the most pervasive symbol is the circle, a shape which embodies both the endless cycle of time and the importance of the interior life. The Christian Cross, however, points outwards and, symbolically, breaks free of the confines of the circle and, instead of pointing inwards, points outwards to a truth outside of the believer.
