How does the author use foreshadowing in The End of the World as We Know It: Scenes from a Life?

In the chapter titled, How I Went On, much is revealed much about Goolrick's life, and the way he was treated by his parents, foreshadowing his revelation of the family secret that has caused him such immense pain.
