In Book I, Chapter I, Henry and Benrix hear a footstep outside of the study. When they step out to find Sarah in the hall, dripping from the rain, Bendrix chides her.... protesting she’ll catch her death of cold if she goes out in the rain, foreshadowing Sarah's death.
