A motif is the relationship between theatre and reality. In order to fulfill theatre's purpose, the author contends, all theatre practitioners (the critical and interpretive) must have an ever-expanding awareness not only of the nature of reality, but also of techniques for shaping interpretations and understandings of reality into a theatrical narrative that somehow conveys the meaning inherent in that expanded awareness to an audience.
