The novel is divided into a preamble and four parts. Each part contains multiple chapters in which Renee Michel tells her story. Each part also contains journal excerpts from Paloma Josse's writings, including entries from her Journal of the Movement of the World and her journal chronicling her Profound Thoughts. Each of these chapters and journal excerpts build on one another even though these two characters do not actually meet until the end of the novel.
