Describe the setting of the play in Act I.

Act I is set in a dark room that was once a vegetable store. Newspapers line the windows. It is unkempt and run down, scattered with household items. Off the main room there is a bedroom, a hallway, a telephone, and a staircase leading to two additional bedrooms. At the bottom of the staircase there is a rustic kitchen. In the front left of the main room there is a wire pet cage.
