Explain how a red fox loses its pursuers?

They watch as Ol' Slick appears by the creek below and sits calmly, watching the water. As the hounds get near, Ol' Slick hops rocks to the middle of the creek. The dogs have a devil of the time trying to get anywhere near Ol' Slick, which makes Granpa and Little Tree roar with laughter.
