How does the author use foreshadowing in The Ear, the Eye and the Arm?

When Tendai releases the bird he comes to the realization that like the bird, he has been trapped and unhappy. Giving the bird its freedom foreshadows that Tendai, like the bird, will be departing for an adventure of his own.
