Why does Marcus worry he may be making a laughing stock out of himself in Chapter 3?

Marcus questions his own judgment in ordering his men to prepare for attack. If there are only cattle outside the fort, he will feel foolish. His Second-in-Command, however says that it is better to be foolish than dead.
