Golyadkin is mortified to be seen by the clerks from his office, and then more so when he is seen by Andrey Filippovich, his supervisor. These characters are not developed in detail, but they obviously represent the voice of and disapproval of society, which makes them significant figures in Golyadkin’s psychology. He is horrified when they see him playing out the personality that comes into existence with the money he found, and can only reconcile himself with their disapproval by disavowing himself.
