Jackson Cawley is described as a good-looking fifteen-year-old from New York who makes an excellent companion for the reader. He is intelligent without showing off, courageous without being stupid, and quick on his feet—necessary traits for anyone who confronts a violent monster capable of tearing him limb from limb.
