The tone of the book is a mix of subjective and objective. Although Jean gives some objectivity about his condition, the prevalence of memories gives a dreamlike subjectivity to the story. Jean's story is true, and the reader should not assume that Jean is falsifying or romanticizing any portion of the book. The subjectivity in the book comes from Jean's own impressions of his life experiences.
