Mrs. Van Daan's personality is complex. She is a shallow, self-centered woman, only half committed to her marriage, and caught up on appearances. She does not often think before she speaks and is hypercritical of Anne, Mr. Van Daan, and Mrs. Frank. She belittles people whenever she has a chance.
