Pride is a recurring idea in this book. In this novel, pride is looked on both as a positive and negative characteristic. For instance, there are places where the priest accusingly states that one character or the other is suffering with pride. For example, there is one point in the novel where the Curé de Torcy is speaking to the young priest about the proper role of the priest.
