In Chapter Fourteen, Ray purchases several items of camping and hiking equipment. He does not purchase hiking boots, however, because he remembers that he has several pairs of boots "back home" on the East Coast. The fact that Ray spends the day buying a suite of equipment foreshadows his commitment to a new style of living.
