Who is Shmuel from The Devil's Arithmetic?

Smuel is Chaya's uncle, Gitl's brother, and Fayge's fiance. He is courageous, strong, and a natural leader. Shmuel takes part in a plan to escape the camp but fails. He is caught and executed.
