In Book Two, the expedition takes the group deeper and further into the earth than anyone has ever gone before, leaving many of the scientists in fear for their lives. This fear is underscored when they hear a radio transmission that appears to be from the future of one of the scientists asking for help after the deaths of everyone in his party. This seems to foreshadow disaster for this expedition.
