Who is Luzhin's Wife from The Defense and what is their importance?

Luzhin's wife is never named. She is twenty-five-years-old and described as well read, compassionate, independent, and quite pretty. Unfortunately, her love does not prove to be the medicine her husband needs, and for the most part, she feels useless. Luzhin's eventual suicide will serve to free her from a situation that will never change.
