In Chapter Six, the reader experiences an emotional attachment toward Portia as a character. We want her to be loved, happy, and safe. We also want Matchett's ominous warning about Eddie's untrustworthiness to be untrue. Yet, the idea that Eddie will be nothing but trouble for Portia is clearly being foreshadowed again and again.
