Fanaticism is a central theme in the story. Vera Smith is a wife and mother who depends heavily on her religious beliefs. When Johnny goes into a coma Vera begins to go off the deep end with an obsession with Scripture and communicating with other fanatics who believe in various religions, some that are universally accepted and some that are outrageous.
