Anger and violence make up another theme. Anger and violence are prominent throughout the novel, as the horrific events of World War II unfold within the story. From small altercations with soldiers to the violent destruction of Berlin following the Allied bombing, Helmut captures the violence of war in Germany on film, showing the gradual change of the citizens within the city. Lore, too, experiences violence and hatred as the knowledge of her Nazi status sets many in post war Germany against her and her siblings.
