Christopher's father hides the truth because he can't explain it. He doesn't think Christopher capable of understanding why his mother left, thus, he tells hin that she's dead. Dead can be understood, it's final...... there's nothing else. None-the-less, Christopher is jolted when he finds his father has lied to him. Dad saved himself having to explain one thing with another.

I don't judge his father for his decision. He thought he was doing the right thing, Let's face it, parents don't always make the right decisions, but their decisions are most often based upon what they feel is right. No one is perfect, and no one is always right.
