When we first meet Strike he is heavily in debt, invested in a business that is struggling at best, and has just come to the end of a long and tempestuous relationship. In essence.... he's a mess. Over the course of the novel, he finds himself involved in an important murder investigation.... something that with Robin's help he solves. In the end, his life has done a complete turn.
