In The Crucible Reverend Parris is the town's minister. He walks a thin line between doing his duty and trying to aquire wealth and power. He is also aware that there are people within the village that know what he is doing and are trying to relieve him of his duties. Because of this he is motivated by the fear that a witch craft scandal in his town while he is in charge could ruin him.
