• Danglars comes to talk to the Count about his wife's loss of money in the market. He mentions he wants his daughter to marry Andrea Cavalcanti.

• Danglars says the Count of Morcef is not a real Count. He promises to look into a scandal he was involved in Greece.

• Fernand meets with Baroness Danglars. He thinks the Count knows of their baby, and they discuss what to do about this.

• Albert invites the Count to a ball at his home. He agrees to come when he hears Mercédès wanted him to.

• The Count comes late to the ball. Mercédès notices that he does not eat anything. She moves the party to the garden and takes the Count's arm.

• Mercédès offers him fruit and talks about an Arabian tradition that states men become eternal friends when they eat under the same roof.

• Albert says the Villeforts have left because Saint Méran, Villefort's father-in-law, has passed away unexpectedly.
