The people of Vestmannaeyjar had no real warning. Some people said they felt vibrations but did not contribute them to the volcano. Seismographs did not register levels of volcanic activity at the site. Residents began seeing physical signs just prior to the eruption, one woman saw a fizzure in the earth, others took photos of the rising lava curtain. Unlike other towns facing eruption the residents were calm in manner and departure.
