James B. Eads invented a submarine to explore the Mississippi River. In addition, he designed two parallel jetties located at the mouth of the Mississippi to create a navigable channel. This was done to allow ships and boats to navigate at the river's mouth, where previously water flowed too slowly for navigation to be possible.
