In the story, Indian Camp, Nick's experiences as a young boy foreshadow the complicated relationship he develops with his father. On the one hand, he admires his father for his skill in all things. At the same time, his father's emotionless approach to life affects how Nick interacts with other people. The continued development of Nick Adams will be effected by all of his life experiences described in the series of stories written about him. It is assumed that the character of Nick is heavily based on Hemingway himself.
