The Great Awakening refers to the period in history defined by the Christian revivalist movement. During the Great Awakening, white Christians sought to convert enslaved blacks to the faith, yet still denied them their freedom. Rather, they used the Bible to further enforce their dominion over blacks, and to demand the submission of enslaved peoples to their white masters. However, Africans adopted the faith as their own, and began meeting and worshipping in secret. The formation of the seemingly invisible black church in the 1700s, gradually led to the establishment of black churches nationwide.
