The book is written in English. Father Ley and Cardinal Bem speak Italian, and all men of the cloth speak Latin. Cardinal Bem tests to see if Father Prisbek is actually a priest by speaking Latin with him.

There is some treatment of language and speech as being linked to social class. Even when Cardinal Bem is in dirty farmer's clothes, he is recognized by the knife-sharpener's girlfriend as some sort of gentleman because of the way he speaks.
