The Cold Equations

Once the stowaway realizes her mistake will mean her death, how does EDS pilot Burton treat her? Is he the cold blooded killer mentioned in the opening, or does he treat her differently?

Barton gives Marilyn all the time he can, all while knowing that he must jettison her from the ship. Note, he is given orders, and he follows them.... the orders were based on saving the lives of many at the expense of one, but this doesn't make Barton's task any easier. He decelerates to give Marilyn additional time to write letters to her family, as well as to contact her brother. There was nothing else Barton could do under the circumstances, and in the end, he is confident that he did all he could for her. As a result, we can see that Barton is not the cold-blooded killer that he appears to be early on.
