Setting is an extremely important component of this novel. This is true of its setting in time, as well as its setting in place, both of which are noteworthy for essentially the same reasons. The novel is set in Cambodia in the mid-1970s, a time of profound military, economic, and social upheaval. During that time, the people of Cambodia were first subjected to the violent, autocratic control of a communist dictatorship, the Khmer Rouge and later placed in the middle of a war between that dictatorship and forces determined to overthrow it (the Vietnamese army).
