Sophie's character provides a close up look at the theme of appearances. She's merely a young girl, who looks and acts like everyone else. Sophie is never viewed as different until she is exposed for her physical differences. Sophie serves as a symbol of the old.... looks aren't everything. She is so much more than a girl with six toes.
