Describe symbolism in The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier

The chocolates become a symbol for defiance and resistance to conformity. Jerry's refusal to sell these chocolates is initially seen as heroic but later seen as traitorous. Ironically the chocolates themselves are not very important rather than what they come to represent.
