The tragic loss of a baby represents perceived punishment for bad moral behavior. Both Nick and Emma pronounce that that they believe the loss of their children served as a punishment for the wrongs they had committed. Nick finally confesses to Angela that he felt he was being punished for having an affair and hurting Angela (198). Over the years Nick had harbored his guilt and never expressed his feelings of guilt or that somehow he was to blame.
