Writing symbolizes expression and communication. It is the opposite of silence. Writing becomes the emotional outlet for Emma who is unable to speak to her mother or husband about her inner turmoil. Ever since she was a teenager, Emma wrote in simple notebooks that became her diaries. She wrote about everything she encountered in her life. It was her private way of expressing herself. She recorded everyday observations of life, as well as the difficult moments. When she grows up and becomes an editor and writer for a publisher, she discovers that she loves the anonymity of her profession. As best sellers, her words are read by millions of people but no one ever knows her identity. While she is unable to talk about her private life and the secrets she keeps hidden, she maintains an outlet for expression through writing.
