What is the symbolism of Cora's corset in the novel, The Chaperone?

The corset Cora wears symbolizes her attachment to the past. Throughout the story, the corset prevents Cora from eating and from doing something as simple as bending over. Thus, her desire to maintain this outdated element reflects how other outdated beliefs she holds are literally and figuratively holding her back.
