How is the carousel significant?

The carousel is significant because it marks Holden's transition into adulthood. He tells Phoebe that she is too old to ride, and yet, he still buys her a ticket. Holden, however, does not ride with her.... a sign that he is beginning to accept his own transition into adulthood.
