Deception is addressed a great deal in The Carnival in My Mind, as Harvey begins to understand and pursue his dreams. Although lying and sneaking are often regarded as character defects, both Harvey and Chandler routinely provide false information about their whereabouts, and invent elaborate stories about themselves. At first these deceptive behaviors are not condoned, but rather accepted as common human conduct. However when Harvey discovers Chandler Brown's prostitution, he questions the importance of truth and his relationships with people who deceive him.
