Who is Hillyard Stillman (Hilly) from The Cape Ann and what is their importance?

Hillyard Stillman, better known as Hilly, is Lark's best friend. Hilly returns from the World War with severely limited mental capabilities, yet he is able to teach Lark much about growing up, expressing and feeling sympathy, and grieving the loss of a loved one.
