Jack London creates suspense by using several techniques. One technique is the passing of time. Though Buck is not aware of the time element, he is aware of daytime and nighttime, hot and cold and he knows what it means to be caught out away fron camp after dark. The other suspenseful element is the use of the wolves. Whether it is their call that continues to remind the reader that Buck is 'that' close to becoming one of them, or it is the actual meeting between the team and the wolves, this continued reminder adds suspense.
