How does the author use foreshadowing in The Cabinet of Curiosities?

In Part IV, Pendergast's suggestion that Leng found a way to prolong his life and is still killing is hard to believe, but it was foreshadowed in earlier chapters and suggests a foe that might be very difficult for Nora, Pendergast, and O'Shaughnessy to face.
