In Part Two, Chapter Fifteen, Changez is violently attacked by racist thugs. Although he survives, he is quite shaken up. Also, Jamila's lover, Simon, is disfigured with a broken bottle at a rally. The lack of action after either of these two attacks shows strongly suggests that the authorities are as poisoned with racism and classism as the general public. The chapter also ends with a physical fight between Karim and Hater, where Karim injures himself.
