The theme of 'life as an immigrant' is seen through the daily abuses and inherent racism Karim endures in school. The theme is also seen in the reflection of how Anwar and Haroon have spent trying to live like Englishmen and, when that didn't work out, reached out to an idealized version of their Indian roots, taking on roles they never would have in the past, such as mystic (Haroon) or a adhering to strict Muslim doctrine (Anwar).
