Daniel's Grandmother's home in the village is very shabby and run-down. It has two pieces of furniture that consist of a large chest and a loom. The mud wall that once separated the room into two has fallen down, and on the mud floor is but one frayed mat.

The house serves as a symbol and metaphor for Daniel's hatred of the Romans, and, at the same time, his need to protect his family.
